FEFSN – Rhonda’s email says:

Good news!

St Andrew’s knox Presbyterian Church is going to host our Community Kitchen Food Meal on Saturday Jan 31 2015 from 11 30 am till 1 pm. Thanks to the donations from Ridgeway & Sherkston & Stevensville United Churches.

We still need people to supply food and volunteers for the months for Sat 30 May 2015 and Sat 31 Oct 2015.

Many thanks to Phyllis Moore for organizing United Church volunteers around this luncheon and Mary Anne Feagan for making the connection and helping to move this initiative forward for the Fort Erie community.

FEFSN advocates updated at our board meeting on wed Dec 10 2014 where we enjoyed a pot luck luck (hello christmas party!) with around 12 people 🙂

It was an update on the Toronto event that was held on Dec 4 2014 along with the CBC news teams, and other media coverages.

It’s a post card to let people know that our local food banks can only afford to give 9% of a food bill to a single person who is in need.  That amounts to $24.50 per month towards their grocery bill.  Which we know the average is $150 a month for a single person, and $300 for two people.

We appreciate the food banks and community kitchen programs but what we’d like to see in our “fight against poverty” is some sort of food program income coming from the Federal Budget.  So far the heavy burden is on the Provincial and Municipal Governments and they are unable to help with this program.

I did have a suggestion which i was told was impossible to find out.  What does our Government spend on luncheon’s for food, meetings and events during or after Parliament Meetings?  I’d like to compare those figures with how much is going into the Food Bank Funding.

The main initiative was can we possibly give each person on social assistance an extra $100 a month for their grocery bills?  Now how can we do that?

Tons of restaurants and businesses get rid of thousands of pounds of food items that have been damaged during shipping (no retail value unable to sell) is there a BILL that you can pass to make it possible for THAT food to be donated to the local food banks and Community Kitchen programs all over Canada, with the added incentive of a tax Credit of 25% like you have now for the registered farmers.

Why not make a TAX Credit for the Grocery Stores and Business Corporations as well, so that they can foot this bill and add Food to the Food Banks – Fresh Vegetables, Meats, Fruits, Breads and Desserts instead of throwing it away and filling up our landfills to maximum capacity.

We have learned to recycle our garbage, let’s find a way to recycle our foods so that no one ever goes hungry in Canada. 🙂
