another group that works to reduce poverty in the Niagara Region – Fort Erie, Ridgeway, Crystal Beach, Welland, Port Colborne, St Catharines and surrounding areas in Ontario, Canada.
There’s a community advocacy group in our town that wants to end poverty.
No doubt the South Coast Residents Against Poverty, SCRAP for short, have taken on a massive problem. Putting an end to poverty means big changes. And they know it’s no easy task.
They also know they are not alone in their call to action.
Since forming last January, SCRAP participated in the Let’s Vote for a Poverty Free Ontario sign campaign leading up to the last provincial election; they were active during Hunger Awareness Week last May and in October they participated in Dignity for All’s, Chew On this Campaign. They know the root cause of hunger is poverty – they work to make sure others know as well.
SCRAP has also been working collaboratively with the Regional Road to Empowerment group to address the disrespect and stigma that people too often face when living in poverty. They recently gathered examples of how this form of discrimination plays out in public spaces and places of business. Together they have developed a community action strategy for addressing some of their concerns.
If this sounds like something you want to get involved in, join us and be part of the change. We meet at Bridges Community Health Centre the third Wednesday of every month, 11-1:30pm. A complimentary lunch is provided.
