At the FSNFE Food Security Network Fort Erie meeting 14 Jan 2014 Nancy was telling us what she needs and is planning for Meals on Wheels here in Fort Erie.
Meals on Wheels needs drivers to help take meals to people. Each car has a server who will take the food to the residence. The only time the driver need to get out of the car is if there is an emergency. Volunteer drivers needed (supply your own gas) and they also need people to sell “lottery” tickets.
Last years goal was for $9200.
Nancy needs at least 10 volunteers.
Each delivery route meets at the Gilmore Lodge.
50 Gilmore Rd. Fort Erie Ontario Canada
1045 am and it takes around 1.5 hours to 2.0 hours depending on the weather.
If it’s bad they do cancel the driving routes. However they do have volunteers that have 4x4s and trucks that will drive on the snowy, stormy days for them (they are on call for such occasions.)
the delivery route is from Ridgeway, Crystal Beach, Black Creek, Stevensville and Fort Erie.
Your route will be in a certain area they try to line them up so your in one district if possible.
it works out to around 10 stops per day which takes the 1.5 hours to deliver.

Nancy says that the meals on wheels clients are from the ages of 85 – 100 and mostly women. We were chuckling thinking it should be more men? They usually love a nice, hot, cooked meal…. But then us gals love to be waited on… like queens! 🙂
